This approach ties drug prices to the clinical benefits that a drug offers patients compared to other treatment options.<\/p>\n<p>Value-based drug pricing is widely used in Australia, Canada, and some European countries, and a few US states have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/research\/health\/value-based-pricing-to-address-drug-costs.aspx\">recently requested<\/a> state plan amendments to incorporate value-based pricing into their Medicaid programs. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/advisory.avalerehealth.com\/insights\/avalere-survey-over-half-of-health-plans-use-outcomes-based-contracts\">2021 survey<\/a> of 51 US-based health plans and pharmacy benefit managers, 56% of payer respondents reported having executed at least one outcomes-based contract (a value-based pricing mechanism).<\/p>\n<p>Health plans use several value-related methods to manage costs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bundling:<\/strong> A single payment for a set of services provided to a patient in a given period; providers are incentivized to use the lowest-cost approach to achieve the desired treatment outcome<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clinical Pathways: <\/strong>A designated treatment course, which can include specific therapies, that is intended to be cost efficient; providers are often rewarded for following the clinical pathway<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exclusion Lists: <\/strong>Formulary exclusions due to cost, quality, therapeutic equivalence, or other factors<\/li>\n<li><strong>Indication Pricing: <\/strong>Pricing a drug based on clinical trial data regarding the effectiveness of the therapy for a specific indication<\/li>\n<li><strong>Outcome-Based Pricing: <\/strong>Payment for a specific therapy based on its outcomes in an individual patient or patient population<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1674669281150{margin-top: 20px !important;}&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;28258&#8243; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; img_caption=&#8221;Figure 1.
